Our Heritage

St. Michael's looks great after refurbishment

The work to improve the church is now complete. This work was made possible by a large grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, grants from the Headley Trust and the North Craven Heritage Trust and the generosity of the people of Malhamdale and beyond.

The heating radiators, initially installed in 1909, have been replaced with high efficiency radiators which are colour matched to their location, and lots of additional radiators under the pew seats. For the first time in living memory, the church is warm for winter use. This has been done with an eye to the future, since there are sufficient radiators to work with a ground sourced heat pump at some stage in the future.

The church is now beautifully and subtly lit with energy efficient LED lights which can be configured to change the lighting to suit the use from normal services to concerts. This excellent lighting in conjunction with the newly painted plaster makes the church suitable for use at all times of day.

An old priest’s door has been reopened, but the condition was not good enough to be refurbished, so it is displayed in an alcove at the back of church on the north side. The new door is beautifully made, and will last centuries.

The final improvement is the provision of a second toilet which is accessible without change in level from the back of church.

Whilst all this has been going on, work has been done to further explore aspects of the heritage of the church. There have been a number of presentations over the last year or so, and these have resulted in the preparation of interpretation boards for use by our many visitors, and articles about our heritage in this website.

The church is open every day, and visitors are very welcome to come and see the beautiful church and its interesting heritage.
